Code of Practice Training

Based on the latest Code of Practice

Lead-in Taper

The Code of Practice Training Programme, 2002 Edition is designed to help all highways personnel to learn, practise, and prepare for assessment in Units 2 and 10 (signing, lighting and guarding) of the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991. There are over 300 teaching points on the selection, sizing and siting of signs and guards in accordance with the 2001 Safety at Street Works and Road Works Code of Practice.

Users interact by clicking on words and pictures, and by dragging signs and objects into position to complete road works layouts. The teaching points are presented in two different ways: for assessment and, alternatively, for practise.
  Scores
The Assessment version of the programme is for simulated assessment testing, for identifying training needs, for maintaining records of individuals' knowledge, and for summarising the test performances of groups of people. It records answers and scores, which can be inspected and analysed in various ways. The original edition was approved by CABWI, with conditions, for use as an aid to assessment for certification.

Practise
The Practise version enables the user to go forwards and backwards through each part of the programme and learn at his or her own pace. It reports the user's score but does not record it.
  Minimum Width
The teaching material is arranged in seven modules in both the Assessment and the Practise versions of the programme. There is an introductory module dealing with key site dimensions, the lead-in taper, and minimum carriageway widths. There are five site assembly modules, and also a supervisors' module. The introductory module includes practise in using the mouse for new computer users.

Advanced
In addition to the Assessment and Practise versions, there is also an Advanced version of the programme which caters for different learning styles. This version contains five site assembly modules. It enables the user to alternate between watching animations of the sites being assembled, and assembling them interactively with opportunities for trying again each time a mistake is made. On request, this part of the programme flags the changes in the 2001 Code of Practice compared with the previous 1992 version.

The Code of Practice Training Programme has been in use by many organisations since 1995 and is produced in conjunction with Mid Kent Water PLC. It has been updated in line with the 2001 Code of Practice.
