We do not recommend that computer programmes should be used as a substitute for either training or assessment by real people using real signs and objects on full-size simulated roads, but rather as an additional resource. The CABWI Rules and Conditions for using the original edition of the Code of Practice Training Programme, which was based on the previous Safety at Street Works and Road Works Code of Practice, are reproduced in full here to indicate the basis upon which the programme was approved and to provide further guidelines for its use. The CABWI Rules and Conditions for Using the Assessment Version of the original edition of the Code of Practice Training Programme as an aid to Assessment and Certification: The programme may only be used for certification by authorised certification centres. Each centre must be approved by CABWI for using this programme for assessments. An external verifier must be satisfied that the centre will use the programme appropriately. The assessment should include at least one test where real signs are handled and erected in a road (or simulation) at a training centre. In the case of Unit 2, at least one complete site should be erected in a road or simulation; in the case of Unit 10, the identification and correction of at least one significant error should be carried out in a road or simulation. The candidate must achieve a high pass mark for the remainder of the range assessed by the computer. A pass mark of 95% is suggested, with all the wrong answers being of a minor nature. The candidate should submit an authenticated witness testimony from his or her supervisor, detailing his experience in items in the range. The Supervisor must be accredited in Unit 10. All candidates should have the option of being tested entirely in "real" situations if they find operating the computer difficult. All new programmes, and programmes incorporating modifications, must be approved by CABWI if they are intended to be used in conjunction with assessments. Rules and conditions for the original edition at June 1996. |
